Between 2016 and 2018, the Swedish national housing program of the 1960s and 70s — known as the Miljonprogrammet — was a particular focus of Public Art Agency Sweden’s work with public art. This was carried out through the government initiative Konst händer (“Art is Happening”), which has so far resulted in 19 artistic works across 15 locations in the country.
A common thread runs through all the projects: each was based specifically on the unique conditions of its particular site. Konst händer was launched through an open call directed at civil society actors in Miljonprogrammet residential areas. The applications included concrete suggestions for places and situations that could be influenced through artistic work. Many of the artworks were also developed in close collaboration with local residents, municipalities, and community organizations.
